Obituary for Kathryn Musso Lacey

MORIAH - Kathryn Musso Lacey of Moriah passed away on March 20, 2018, at Elizabethtown Community Hospital, where she was treated with great compassion in her final days.

Kathryn was born in Newark, New Jersey on April 27, 1923, the daughter of John and Filippina Musso.

She spent a year of her childhood in the place she loved so dearly, the island of Sicily, the place of her parents birth. After graduating from high school she attended Montclair State Teachers College and also worked for the government during World War II. Teaching would be the foundation during her long journey through life. It was more than just a job - it was her passion; even when she married Paul Lacey on September 24, 1954, the ceremony was in the evening (after school, of course!). How many post graduate institutions did she attend? Too many to count - she was always keen to learn more. She got her masters degree in education and psychology from SUNY Plattsburgh and in one of her proudest achievements, attended Oxford University on the Treadwell Scholarship in the summer of 1991.

Kathryn had so many interests, vast and varied. Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, women's rights, women in literature, all things Sicilian, art, music, creative writing, languages (she spoke four), cooking, baking, high tea (she ran two tea rooms, one in Moriah and another for several winters on Jekyll Island). She was so good at many things, perhaps her proudest moments came when the potential she saw and cultivated in those many, many students blossomed and those students returned to thank her for her persistence and her belief in them. That was always her great reward.

Family was always important. Kathryn grew up in New Jersey and spent summers on the Jersey Shore with her parents, cousins, aunts and uncles. Yes - she was a Jersey Girl! She kept in touch with all the relatives, even after moving to Moriah in 1969 with her husband and children. She would call the cousins in Sicily too, almost every week. She was proud of her heritage and made the journey back to Sicily on several occasions: once with her father in his later years and once with her beloved grandson Christopher. She would always remark how amazing it was that her grandson would rather go to Italy with his grandmother than to spend spring break with his friends.

Kathryn was predeceased by her parents and her husband of 60 years, Paul.

She leaves behind her children - daughter, Lisa (Tom) Scorsome of Moriah, and son, Michael (Valerie) Lacey of Orlando, FL; grandson, Christopher Lacey (and his fiancée Madeline Sego) of Bloomington, IN; sister, Jean Lamont of West Lake Village, CA; nephew, John Lamont of Santa Monica, CA; her beloved cat Frankie; as well as many friends who were also considered family.

At Kathryn's request there will be no services and her ashes will be scattered in the Mediterranean Sea. For those who wish to celebrate Kathryn's life there will be a gathering of remembrance at her home on Sunday, April 15, 2018 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Donations can be made in her name to the Town of Moriah Ambulance Squad, the North Country SPCA, or your local library.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home of Ticonderoga. To offer online condolences, please visit
